Our Story
Founded in 1994
By a group of educators looking to celebrate heritage and support young students in track & field, El Grito 5k quickly became a yearly tradition for our community to come together and share joy and solidarity.
Annual tradition
Kicking off at the Buckhorn Exchange, our 5k was more than a race, it was a journey through the historic La Alma Lincoln Park neighborhood.
30 Editions later
As we celebrate our 31st edition this year, we also honor and commemorate the lives, memories, and legacies of those in our founding group that have gone ahead of us.

Maintaining tradition in the heart of Denver
Denver has transformed a lot since we first got started in 1995—but we still remember those early mornings kicking things off at the Buckhorn Exchange in Lincoln Park, breakfast burritos in hand. This year, we’re keeping the tradition alive and staying rooted in the heart of the city, with a course that winds entirely within the vibrant Auraria Campus!
The 5k consists of three loops, with kickoff taking place from the Jordan Student Success Building lawn.
We will have access to hydration drinks as well as beer for runners. You must provide proof of being 21+ years old to drink alcohol.
